Apples and Acorns Parable
There was once an apple tree that lived in an enormous orchard in the middle of the farmlands. There were thousands of trees that lived here, primarily apple trees. Where this particular apple tree lived was surrounded by other apple trees completely. Except there was always that Great Oak tree that was stationed close to the apple tree. Close enough to where they could have long conversations throughout the day, but still be heard by the rest of the surrounding neighbors. Everyone listened to these knowledge filled trees exchange humorous anecdotes, and heart-filled stories from their past lives in other places, far, far away. This apple tree that had made exceptional friends with the oak tree was neglecting all of his other friends that were all around him that he used to talk to. The oak tree had always been the quiet type, until this apple tree had started talking with him. And ever since then, the apple tree had not said a single word to his other friends. The other apple trees were getting to dislike him with every day he had gone ignoring them, and decided that they would leave him and the oak tree to talk all they wanted because they didn’t care anymore about their once best friend.
One stormy night in the middle of Autumn, there was a streak of light that could be seen from miles away by even the nasty old bushes that lived on the outskirts of the orchard. And even by the humans, who lived even further away in messy cities with coal burning cars and polution invading streets. They were nasty creatures with nothing but the word, greed in their tiny little sculls. But this streak of light, was one that would change an apple tree’s life forever. None of the other trees could see anything after the split second that the lightening had lasted. The rain and sleet covered everything. All of the trees closed their eyes and waited the terrible night out.
With morning came the sounds of shock from the trees around the orchard. Wispers were traveling like wild hornets throughout all of the trees. As soon as the apple tree that had made friends with the oak had woken up, he knew what had happened. A rumor had accidentally slithered into his ear, which only confirmed what had been in his head. He remembered seeing the lightening bolt last night that struck so loud that he thought it had hit the ground. The apple tree looked over to where his old friend was and saw in his place, a dead tree. What had happened, he already knew.
In this world you have no idea of what is going to happen to you or your friends, or even your family. Hold on to whatever you have, and cherrish every minute you spend with those special people. Good things never last. After that apple tree had no friends in the whole orchard. One day three years later, he saw a young yew tree starting to sprout in the place where his long time friend oak tree had once stood. A smile creased itself into his old wooden face.
